The Housing Directorate is responsible for execution and maintenance of rental housing schemes for different income groups with emphasis on the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), quarters for State Government employees and integrated housing estates for industrial workers and maintaining of those buildings throughout West Bengal. In addition to all these, this Directorate also undertakes Deposit Work entrusted by Various Departments and undertakings including development work through M.P. & M.L.A. Fund. A major portion of Development work at Rajarhat, New Town, Kolkata has been assigned to this Directorate by WBHIDCO. Housing Directorate has successfully completed land acquisition, its exhaustive survey work, its Development, construction of Roads, Bridges, Culverts etc. at Rajarhat and still confirming with such development works as being assigned time to time WBHIDCO. The Chief Engineer (CE) heads the HD. He is assisted by one Assistant Chief Engineer and by four Superintending Engineers (SE) and 15 Executive Engineers (EE) at the Circle and Divisional levels respectively.

Housing Directorate under Housing Department is entrusted with the noble mission to provide shelter to all classes of people belonging to the lowest rung to the topmost rung of the society. Since creation of the Directorate it's able management has successfully provided roof over the head of almost 34,000 families, scattered all over the State of West Bengal.

The social obligation is given the topmost priority in selecting the projects. Under the social upliftment programme a good number of accommodation has been provided to the people belonging to economically weaker section of the society. Apart from these, hostel accommodation for working women and night shelters for waiting passengers at Bus Terminus and patient party at Hospitals are also included in the activity of the Directorate.
